The Truckee Sunrise Rotary Club announced applications are now being accepted for the Betsy Watson Nursing Scholarship awarded annually to an outstanding area nursing student.

The $1,000 scholarship grant will honor the memory of Elizabeth “Betsy” Watson, a long-time professional nurse, nursing educator and nursing administrator at Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee.

Betsy Watson, who was crowned the 2004 Nurse of the Year at Tahoe Forest Hospital, spent more than 20 years nursing for various departments in the hospital, and, according to her peers, has left an indelible mark wherever she has gone.

She passed away after a long struggle with cancer in May 2008.

Speaking for her family, her husband Tom Watson said, “I can think of no better tribute to what Betsy cared most deeply about in her professional life. This generous award will make is easier for a deserving student to pursue a successful career in Betsy’s footsteps.”

The scholarship is open to U.S. citizens or nationals enrolled as a full-time or part-time nursing student in an accredited nursing program without regard to race, color, religion or national origin. Preference is given to qualified applicants with the greatest financial need.

Interested nursing students should contact Kathy Bender of the Truckee Sunrise Rotary Club at 530-581-7696 or kbender04@gmail.com.
